MONS – Recycling and Resource efficiency: a key factor for the industrial sector. Discover 3 companies’ best practices
During this thematic tour in Mons, you will have the opportunity to discover the best practices in terms of resource efficiency and recycling implemented by Holcim, Comet Traitements and Wanty. At the end of the day, a reception will be given at the Van der Valk Hotel in Mons. That will be a real opportunity to discover the local strategy in terms of circular economy.

For almost 60 years, the IDEA economic development agency has been promoting the Heart of Hainaut region. It currently groups 27 municipalities with more than 520,000 inhabitants, located in the southwest of Belgium. Mons is one of the largest cities in the region as well as La Louvière (see map below).
Thanks to its reputation and its qualities, Mons and the Heart of Hainaut area have attracted innovative SME’s and major international groups interested in expanding their businesses there, including those which are already deeply engaged in recycling and resource efficiency.
Given its special knowledge of the sectors, IDEA wishes to highlight sustainable technologies which have been developed by major industrial groups and starts-up companies.
During this 2nd day of Circular Economy Hotspot, the visits planned will be an opportunity to discover the best practices in terms of resource efficiency and recycling implemented by the following industrial groups:
Since the 1970s, LafargeHolcim has pioneered the co-processing of waste materials, and has for decades developed innovative and tailored industrial and municipal waste management services for a wide range of customers. With a commitment to drive sustainable solutions for better building and infrastructure and to contribute to a better quality of life, the Group is best positioned to meet the challenges of increasing urbanisation. It manages more than 10 million tons of waste annually, thus making a tangible contribution to bringing society a step closer to a zero-waste future.
Comet Group, a Belgian family-owned industrial group, specialising in trading ferrous and non-ferrous metals and the derivatives thereof. They have developed new technologies and an industrial capacity that make them a leading company in Europe in terms of recycling of materials. Their Research & Development cell has enabled the group to achieve valorisation percentages that have remained unequalled so far: 98.4 % on highly diversified products such as ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, end-of-life vehicles (ELV), waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and shredder residues.
The 3rd site to be visited is that of Wanty’s subsidiary, the “Enrobées du Centre”. It is a high-capacity asphalt mixing plant, capable of producing some 300 tons per hour and with a ready-to-use asphalt storage capacity of 900 tons. An installation that pays extreme attention to the quality of incoming and outgoing materials, as well as to the environment and costs, thanks to a waste recycling programme that allows up to 50% recycled materials to be incorporated into the final mixture.
At the end of the day, a reception will be given at the Van der Valk Hotel in Mons. That will be a real opportunity to discover the local strategy in terms of circular economy.
IDEA, the territory development agency, will be joined by iNex – Circular, a start-up company which develops analysis tools based on open-data and data mining to connect waste producers and buyers. iNex Analytics can automatically simulate waste and resources of every European companies without getting in touch with them. It relies on companies and flow data collection, web qualification scrappers and flow simulations through machine learning. iNex has worked on territories in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Germany.
Looking forward to seeing many of you and show you how our industrial sector is efficient in recycling and using innovative processes!
